The Lake-Epilogue

Epilogue–9 years later

Lily scrunched up her eyes as she studied the painting that she was working on.  She squinted her eyes shut, so that only a little bit of light came through, and tried to discern what it was about the painting that was bothering her.  She only had two more days to finish it before it was due back to her Art teacher.

120

The phone next to her bed jangled loudly.  She sighed and set her paintbrush down, although right now she almost welcomed the distraction.  She walked over to the phone and picked it up.  “Hello?” she said, pushing a stray hair back behind her ear.

121

“Hi, Lily!” she heard her friend Malorie’s voice on the other end.  “Hey, I was just sitting here with some of the girls and we were talking about making a trip out to Falwell Lake on Saturday afternoon.  Are you up for it?”  Lily felt an uneasiness creep into stomach and she swallowed.  Searching quickly for a plausible excuse, she lied, “Uh, sorry Mal.  I can’t.  I’ve got an art project that is due next week and I haven’t gotten very much done on it.  If I don’t get it done in time, Mr. Von will freak on me.  I just don’t have time.  I’m sorry.  But thanks for asking.”

122

She could hear Malorie’s disappointed “tsk” on the other end of the line.  This was the third time that she had turned down her friends’ invitations to go to the lake with them.  She knew that they weren’t going to buy her feeble excuses for very much longer.  Sometime she knew that she was going to have to admit to them that she was deathly afraid of all big bodies of water and wouldn’t venture anywhere near them.  As far as she could remember, she had had this unreasonable phobia since childhood.

123

“Well, alright then,” Malorie said, the disappointment clear in her voice.  “I want to see your project when it’s done then, OK?”  Lily smiled and agreed, replacing the receiver back in its holder.  She turned back to her painting and squinted at it again, trying to decide what needed to be done.  She added a few more details to it and then stood back to admire her work.

124

It was one of her favorites that she had done so far.
